Restoration of Dresden’s Frauenkirche

For the reconstruction, the ruins were removed stone by stone from January 4th 1993 and all usable remains were surveyed, catalogued and warehoused. Based on the position in the ruins, computer technology was used to determine the original position in the walls for many stones. A total of over 8,000 pieces were recovered, of which 3,539 were built into the exterior façade.

Even though the ruin no longer acts as a monument, the traces of the war will remain visible for a long time: The outer walls are a patchwork of new, light-coloured stones and blackened original stones. It will take decades before they have the same colouring. The Protestant Frauenkirche was inaugurated on October 30th 2005 on the Feast of the Reformation and, at 91.24 m, it is one of the highest religious buildings in the baroque city. Since then, Dresden's Frauenkirche has been a part of Dresden’s townscape and retaken its familiar and undisputed place in the world-famous silhouette of the City of Dresden.
